What is Eczema?

Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is the classic red, scaly, oozing, and itchy rash that often starts in childhood. It is incredibly common and it can present in various forms. Patients with eczema in childhood are at significant risk for developing other related diseases like asthma and food allergies. Many patients have unnecessarily suffered with it their entire lives.

Eczema is the most common chronic inflammatory skin disease. The key to freedom from eczema is empowering each patient to manage their disease. With our team, products, and our educational resources, you can take control of your eczema and live your life to the fullest.

While eczema is a chronic condition, SootheRx has many unique solutions to empower the patient to take control of their disease.

How is eczema caused?

Eczema is caused by a combination of two major factors: 1) many patients with eczema have mutations in a gene that produces a very important skin barrier protein called filaggrin and 2) patients with eczema are born with an immune system that is uniquely prone to becoming activated in response to further irritation of the skin barrier. The reality is that what causes eczema likely cannot be reversed. However, there are many things that can trigger or exacerbate eczema that can be very well controlled. That is the goal of SootheRx.

What are the symptoms?

Patients usually are itchy with a red, scaly rash that can be oozy. Although eczema can appear almost anywhere, depending on the age of the patient, it presents in very typical patterns. For example, infants often develop eczema on the wrists, ankles, and cheeks. Children and adolescents will often develop eczema behind the knees and in the folds of their arms. Patients with eczema can develop complications like infections with Staphlococcus aureus which often goes unnoticed.

How is it diagnosed?

Typically, eczema is not a hard diagnosis. Most patients know they have it and primary care providers have already diagnosed it. However, in some instances, there are other rare causes of skin rash that can mimic eczema. SootheRx is here to help ensure proper diagnosis and has the expertise to put your mind at ease.

What are the treatments?

Patients can be treated with various moisturizers, prescription medications like topical steroids and calcineurin inhibitors, wet wraps, bleach baths, and phototherapy in most mild and moderate cases. However, in some moderate and most severe cases, systemic medications that modulate the immune system is required. We at SootheRx can help you figure out the best approach no matter what kind of eczema you have.

What is the prognosis?

While there is no cure for eczema, people living with eczema usually have periods of remission and can be free from symptoms for years, especially with proper treatment.

How is it prevented?

Flares of eczema can be prevented by maintaining a personalized regimen that can avert exacerbations.
