What is Diaper Rash?

Diaper rash is a red, irritated rash in babies that affects the groin, genital, or buttock areas and in some cases may extend to the lower back. Diaper rash occurs in most infants until the age of 1 year.

Diaper rash is not a serious condition in most cases although this condition causes pain to the baby and frustration for parents when traditional treatments often do not provide lasting relief. We have some quick and easy solutions based on expert experience and results. Let us help your baby get back to comfort and wellness and bring you peace of mind.

How is diaper rash caused?

Diaper rash is caused by excessive moisture trapped against the skin, wearing soiled or infrequently changed diapers, or heightened skin sensitivity.  Diaper rash is a common form of inflamed skin (dermatitis) that appears as bright red patches on the groin, genitals, and buttocks. It generally affects babies, although anyone who wears a diaper regularly can develop the condition.

How is it prevented?

Diaper rash is prevented through keeping the groin and diaper area clean and dry at all times.

Change diapers often and remove wet or dirty diapers promptly.

Rinse your baby’s skin with clean warm water as part of each diaper change. If you wish to use soap, select a mild, natural and fragrance-free soap.

When cleaning, do not scrub your baby’s bottom as this can further irritate the skin. Wipe gently and pat dry with clean dry towel or cotton ball.

Keep diapers snug but be sure not to over-tighten diapers as this can prevent airflow into the groin area, which creates a moist environment that further spreads diaper rash. Tight diapers can also lead to chafing of the waist and thighs.

When possible, allow your baby time without a diaper on to dry the groin area naturally. Exposing the skin to air is a natural and gentle way to reduce moisture on your baby’s skin. One way to do this is to lay your baby on a large towel and engage in some playtime while he or she is bare-bottomed.

Consider using an ointment to gently moisturize the affected areas an a regular basis. If your baby gets rashes often, apply a barrier ointment during each diaper change to prevent skin irritation. SootheRx can point you to the best agents to help with you or your baby’s diaper rash.
